Before the main tournament begins, several matches are played in the playoff round. Out of 64 teams, only the top four advance. During the Verbandspokal stage, the winners of the regional leagues are determined. Both professional and amateur clubs are eligible to participate, which levels the playing field. Only those who perform best in the earlier stages are allowed to progress to the finals.
Since August 23, 2024, 18 teams have competed for the championship and cup Germany DFB. Two of the challenger clubs stand out – St. Pauli and Holstein Kiel. The teams are participating in the championship for the first time to replace the other two teams relegated to the Second Bundesliga.
